How to Read a Leather Working Group Tannery Rating
LWG certification is one of the most quoted claims in leather sourcing, and one of the easiest to misread.

The Leather Working Group audits tanneries on environmental performance, from water and energy use to waste and chemical management.
What the rating tells you
Audited tanneries receive a medal-style rating, with Gold the highest. A higher rating means stronger environmental practice at that tannery.
What it does not cover
The rating applies to the tannery, not to the finished belt or bag, and says nothing about the factory that cuts and stitches your product.
What to ask your supplier
Which tannery supplies each leather on my order?
What is that tannery's current rating, and when does it expire?
Can I see the certificate or the tannery's LWG listing?
Traceability, not a logo, is what makes the claim useful.
